Beckman Institute Mentoring Workshop 2009

The Beckman Institute Mentoring Workshop is targeted to senior (advanced) graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are interested in pursuing an academic career. The workshop will be led by Beckman Institute faculty members. Topics to be covered include:
- Positioning oneself to maximize opportunities for an academic position
- Finding the right institutional fit
- Putting together a successful CV
- The interview process
- Negotiating a start-up package
- Demands of academic career for a young Assistant Professor; how to balance teaching, research, mentoring of students, and service
- How to find a senior mentor, and identify good research collaborators
- How to find grant opportunities and make the most of them
- Understanding the tenure process
- Balancing family and career
Each session will include presentations by Beckman faculty as well as ample time for discussion and break outs. The workshops are open to all Beckman Institute graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
