The Nadine Barrie Smith Memorial Fund supports the 'Nadine Barrie Smith Graduate Fellowship' in medical imaging at the Beckman Institute beginning Fall 2011. Nadine Barrie Smith grew up in Chicago and came to the University of Illinois as an undergraduate student in Computer Science in 1982. She completed her BS Computer Science in 1985, her MS in Electrical Engineering in 1989 and PhD in Biophysics in 1996. The Fund honors and supports one of Dr. Smith's many passions – promoting women in science – thus, the Fellowship will support female graduate engineering students to pursue research in medical imaging including: ultrasound, optical, and MRI modalities.
Dr. Smith was a professor in Bioengineering and Acoustics at Penn State University prior to her untimely death in April 2010 at the age of 48. Throughout her career she was a renowned leader in medical imaging and therapeutic ultrasound. In addition to her research, Dr. Smith was a major contributor to women in engineering initiatives, and a national figure in establishing undergraduate research programs, as well as actively mentoring numerous graduate students in her field.
The Nadine Barrie Smith Memorial Fund is made possible by the generous support of her family: Jean Smith (mother), Arnette Bosch (sister), and Dr. Andrew Webb (husband; former ECE faculty member and former Director of the Biomedical Imaging Center at the Beckman Institute). We are grateful to Dr. Smith's many family and friends who have given to the Fund to honor and recognize Dr. Smith's accomplishments in science, engineering, and education. The Fund also supported the installation of a memorial bench
in the Beckman Institute Garden.
